Eden fruits

Just when I said the monsoon season is upon us, the sun decides to shine the whole day today. Cloudless blue skies, too. But then, TV news confirmed my weather forecast. A storm brewing just outside of Philippine waters will usher in the monsoon.

So it was off to buy summer fruits. These are from the Eden Fruit Medley (which I featured a few posts ago) at the supermarket. Yummy!

End of summer

It seems the end of tag-araw (days of sun) and the beginning of tag-ulan (days of rain). It was a short summer for us all, what with climate change.

But in the places I've lived in the past 14 years, Dumaguete City and Davao City, the usual tag-araw and tag-ulan seasons in the Philippines didn't really seem to apply. Perhaps because both aren't in the usual typhoon path. So when it's hurricane season in the rest of the country, Dumaguete and Davao doesn't seem to share the same weather.

In a way, both places have their own weather patterns. Dumaguete and Davao both have hot sunny days and balmy evenings, with the occasional rain, during the tag-araw. And during tag-ulan, it's humid cloudy days and the sudden downpour in the late afternoon and evening for both Dumaguete and Davao.

Just like that view outside my bedroom window.

Extreme biker

Found this photo I took one night walking tipsy to the entrance of Matina Town Square to get a taxi home. The extreme biker adorns the entrance to an extreme sports shop. Kinda cool, right. Here's another view. ;-)

Theme Day: Shadows -- Dappled yard

This is a photo of the campfire site at Eden Nature Park. We had a bonfire the night before this picture was taken. The following day I went back to the site for a nap, as I knew the trees around it would provide some shade from the sun.

I like how the sun shining down through the trees gives a dappled effect on the green grass.

Pedestrian overpass

This one was along Quimpo Boulevard, right after Almendras Gym and the mosque. Among the pedestrian overpasses in this city, this is one that people actually use. Perhaps because it's near the Land Transportation Office, so there's bound to be a traffic policeman around.

This one sports a sign announcing the Araw ng Dabaw, as well as the araw of every district in the city.

Mosque

That's a mosque with the muezzin's tower right there in center and upper right of the picture. I took this photo with my camera phone while on a jeepney. Lucky for me the traffic light flashed red and so the jeepney had to stop. I would have wanted to be on that taxi there, and get a better view. This was along Quimpo Boulevard, near the Almendras Gym.

Recognition Day

Photos by Jean Claire Dy

We had our Recognition Program and Send-Off Ceremony for the 2009 graduates last Saturday. It was a solemn ceremony with the graduates lighting candles to symbolize their carrying the torch of knowledge beyond the halls of academe, and with the faculty lining up and shaking the hands of graduates as they exited the Audio-Visual Hall.

The program also included the awarding of certificates and medals for graduating students who excelled in the different disciplines. While this is an annual affair, today's ceremony was memorable for the inclusion of the candle-lighting and send-off rituals.

Gran Meng Seng

UP Mindanao employees and stakeholders spent the whole day today in one of the function rooms of this building, the Gran Meng Seng Hotel, for the "Consultative Forum on the Roadmap for UP's Next 100 Years."

Gran Meng Seng is along busy, any time of day, Magallanes St. (My mistake: yesterday's photo was of C.M. Recto St. that was used to be called "Claveria.")

Urban decay

This is part of the old downtown area in Davao City. The street is now named C. M. Recto, after a Commonwealth era stateman; it used to be called Magallanes, after Ferdinand Magellan.

The street is lined with buildings built around the '50s and '60s. It looks and feels like the Quiapo district in Manila.
